Anthropic has announced that starting September 28, it will use chat transcripts from most Claude accounts for AI training. The update applies to all subscription tiers, including Claude Free, Pro, Max, and Code. However, those on Claude for Work (Team and Enterprise plans), Claude Gov, and Claude Education are excluded. Additionally, users accessing Claude via Amazon Bedrock or Google Cloud’s Vertex AI will not be impacted.
Although users may initially delay acceptance by clicking “not now,” most accounts will be opted in by default from the effective date. The company says only new and resumed chats will be used, while older conversations remain untouched. Furthermore, Anthropic plans to store opted-in transcripts for five years to monitor misuse, compared to its previous 30-day retention policy.
This move reflects a growing trend among tech firms. Companies are revising policies to use customer data for AI training or licensing. Notably, WeTransfer recently faced backlash after suggesting user files might train machine learning models, before later removing that language.
Why the Change Matters
The shift comes amid intense competition in generative AI. Vast datasets fuel more advanced models, such as Claude Opus 4.1, Anthropic’s latest coding-focused release. Yet growing concerns about privacy and data use have sparked pushback. Many firms now provide clearer opt-out options to avoid alienating their users.
Critics argue that opting in by default places the burden on individuals to safeguard their information. On the other hand, Anthropic and similar companies contend that training on real interactions helps improve safety and accuracy. The tension between innovation and privacy continues to shape AI adoption worldwide.
