Italian Startup Launches Gene.01 Touch-Sensing Humanoid Robot

An Italian robotics startup has introduced Gene.01, a humanoid robot platform designed for safe collaboration with humans in industrial environments. The company built the platform in just six months by combining full-body tactile sensing with physics-native artificial intelligence. Moreover, Gene.01 will make its U.S. debut at AMD Advancing AI 2026 on July 22–23.

Configurable Humanoid Brings Human-Like Touch and Learning

Unlike fixed-purpose humanoid robots, Gene.01 works as a configurable platform that adapts through AI models, exterior design, and interchangeable end effectors. As a result, manufacturers can tailor it for tasks in manufacturing, logistics, inspection, public safety, and healthcare.

Additionally, the robot features a distributed “smart skin” system with sensors that detect touch, proximity, force, and temperature. Therefore, it can anticipate human presence and respond before and during physical contact, improving workplace safety.

The force-sensing system also enables operators to teach tasks through physical demonstrations. Instead of learning only movements, the robot understands the amount of force required for each action. Consequently, it overcomes a key limitation of vision-only learning systems. The platform’s architecture jointly optimizes mechanics, sensing, and motion control while building on research recently published in Nature Machine Intelligence.

“Unlike other one-size-fits-all humanoids, Gene.01 is a scalable platform, customised at the edge of AI, design and end-effector level to maximise each customer’s needs,” said Daniele Pucci, CEO of Generative Bionics. “Our goal is to amplify humans with robots that can sense, feel and learn from the physical world while adapting to specific industrial tasks.”

Industrial Expansion Moves Beyond the Lab

The startup, which spun out of the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa, secured €70 million in funding in December 2025. The investment ranks among Europe’s largest deep-tech funding rounds for humanoid robotics. Earlier this year, the company revealed Gene.01 as a concept during CES 2026.

Meanwhile, it has partnered with shipbuilder Fincantieri to develop a humanoid welding robot for shipyard operations. The four-year collaboration plans to begin on-site testing at the Sestri Ponente shipyard in Genoa before the end of 2026. If development stays on schedule, the system should reach operational functionality within two years.

Open-Source Strategy Aims to Accelerate Robotics Development

To encourage broader adoption, the company has released Gene.01’s digital twin and robot model as open-source software through PyPI, conda-forge, and the ROS build farm. Consequently, developers can build and test Physical AI applications before deploying them on physical hardware.

Rather than positioning Gene.01 as a standalone product, the company aims to establish it as a foundation for a broader ecosystem of industrial robotics applications. This approach could accelerate innovation while giving developers greater flexibility to create specialized automation solutions.
