X Launches Rebuilt Android App After Year-Long Overhaul
X has launched a completely rebuilt Android app after nearly a year of development, marking one of the company’s most ambitious software projects since its rebranding. The new application replaces the previous Android version with a modern foundation designed to improve speed, reliability, and future feature development. As a result, Android users can now download the updated app through the Google Play Store.
The company first announced the overhaul in 2025 after acknowledging that the Android experience had fallen behind its iOS counterpart. Since then, X assembled a dedicated Android engineering team to redesign the application from the ground up. Consequently, the release represents the completion of a year-long effort to modernize the platform.
New Foundation Delivers Faster Performance
Unlike a routine software update, the new Android app uses an entirely fresh codebase built with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose. Therefore, X says users will notice faster loading times, smoother scrolling, improved notifications, and greater overall stability.
Nikita Bier, Head of Product at X, described the project as one of the company’s largest engineering efforts. He also said the rewrite creates a stronger technical foundation that will allow developers to introduce new features much faster in future updates.
Meanwhile, Grok clarified that the Android rewrite was completed by X’s engineering team rather than by AI-generated code. The company noted that AI tools helped developers work more efficiently, but engineers built the application on a clean Kotlin and Jetpack Compose stack.
More Android Features Are Still Coming
Although the rebuilt app is now available, X says development is continuing. For example, engineers are still working on support for hosting Spaces directly on Android and improving performance on older devices. As those updates arrive, Android users should receive new capabilities more quickly than before.
The release also reflects Android’s growing importance to X. Earlier this year, the company reported strong Android download growth, which encouraged additional investment in the platform. Furthermore, the new architecture positions Android to receive future innovations at a faster pace. According to Bier, many upcoming features could even debut on Android before reaching other platforms.
