WhatsApp Removes Avatar Feature as Meta Shifts Focus to AI

WhatsApp avatar feature removal notice

Meta is phasing out the avatar feature from WhatsApp on both Android and iOS. As a result, users can no longer create, edit, or use avatars in their profiles. This change marks the quiet exit of a feature tied to earlier metaverse ambitions.

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is “officially discontinuing the avatar feature on Android and iOS, removing support for creation, editing, and profile usage.” Meanwhile, the rollout is happening gradually, so users are experiencing different stages of removal. Some users already see alerts stating their avatars can no longer be edited. Others, however, have noticed the entire avatar section has disappeared.

In addition, the removal affects several parts of the app. For example, avatars no longer appear in settings, chat info screens, or the keyboard. Consequently, users cannot send avatar stickers directly in conversations anymore. However, previously sent stickers remain visible in recent or favorite sections.

Although the company has not provided a detailed explanation, the feature is expected to disappear in the coming weeks.

A Feature That Never Fully Landed

Initially, avatars launched in late 2022 as digital representations for profiles and stickers. Moreover, the feature resembled tools like Snapchat Bitmoji, offering personalization options. Over time, updates added new clothing styles and customization features.

However, adoption remained limited despite these improvements. As a result, the feature never became a core part of the messaging experience. Therefore, its removal may not significantly impact most users.

Shift Toward AI and Robotics

At the same time, Meta is shifting focus away from metaverse-driven products. Instead, the company is investing more heavily in artificial intelligence and robotics. Recently, Meta acquired Assured Robot Intelligence, a startup focused on humanoid robotics.

Furthermore, the company has expanded its research efforts within Reality Labs, strengthening its focus on emerging technologies.
