Ubisoft has reportedly submitted an offer to acquire Arkane Lyon, the French video game studio owned by Microsoft’s Xbox division. The move comes as Microsoft explores options to sell the developer amid a broader restructuring of its gaming business.
According to a report published on November 4, 2026, at least three companies, including Ubisoft, are interested in acquiring the studio. Two other gaming companies have also submitted offers, although their identities remain undisclosed.
Microsoft has not accepted any bid, and negotiations remain ongoing. Additionally, Xbox is considering another option that would let Arkane’s management team acquire the studio and run it independently.
The potential sale could shape Arkane Lyon’s future and its ongoing development projects. In particular, the studio is currently developing Marvel’s Blade, an upcoming game based on the Marvel character.
Microsoft Explores Multiple Options for Arkane
The acquisition discussions follow Microsoft’s broader restructuring of its Xbox gaming division. The company has been reviewing its studio portfolio and considering divestments involving several development teams.
Arkane Lyon has faced uncertainty as Microsoft explores a new ownership structure. However, the studio remains operational while the consultation and sale process continues.
Ubisoft is currently the only publicly identified bidder. Nevertheless, at least two other gaming companies have reportedly submitted competing offers.
Microsoft has also considered selling the developer to its existing management team. This arrangement could allow Arkane Lyon to become an independent studio.
The company has also extended the consultation period to December 13, 2026. Microsoft previously set November 13 as the deadline, but the process now has additional time for potential buyers to negotiate.
A Microsoft representative said that Xbox continues to explore strategic options ahead of the December deadline. However, the company declined to disclose further details about the negotiations.
Marvel’s Blade Development Adds Importance to Sale
Marvel’s Blade remains a central consideration in the potential acquisition. Arkane Lyon announced the single-player action-adventure game at The Game Awards in 2023.
The title follows Marvel’s vampire hunter Blade through a quarantined district of Paris. Moreover, the project combines Arkane’s established immersive gameplay approach with Marvel’s popular comic-book universe.
The game currently has no confirmed release date. However, reports suggest a potential release within the next year or two.
A successful sale could give the studio a path to continue development. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s search for a buyer has raised questions about the project’s long-term funding and publishing arrangements.
Arkane Lyon built its reputation through critically acclaimed titles, including Dishonoured and Deathloop. The studio also developed Prey, which helped establish its position in the immersive simulation genre.
Importantly, the potential acquisition concerns Arkane Lyon in France, not the former Arkane Austin studio. Microsoft closed Arkane Austin in 2024 after commercial difficulties with Redfall.
Ubisoft’s Own Restructuring Adds Complexity
Ubisoft’s reported interest comes amid significant restructuring at the French publisher. The company has been reorganising its development operations and reducing costs across its global business.
Consequently, acquiring Arkane Lyon would raise questions about staffing, project funding, and the studio’s creative independence.
Ubisoft could gain access to Arkane’s experience in immersive game design. Its portfolio includes major franchises such as Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry and Splinter Cell.
However, the financial terms of its offer remain undisclosed. The identities of the competing bidders also remain unknown.
For now, Microsoft has not selected a buyer or finalised an agreement. The December 13 deadline will therefore become an important milestone for Arkane Lyon’s future.
The outcome could determine whether the studio joins Ubisoft, becomes independent under its management or moves to another gaming company. Meanwhile, developers and players will be watching closely for clarity on Marvel’s Blade and its development schedule.
