SpaceX Boosts AI Data Center Power Production

SpaceX is building a turbine-blade foundry in Bastrop, Texas, as Elon Musk seeks to ease a growing power bottleneck for AI data centers. The facility will cast turbine blades and vanes, which currently limit the production of natural-gas power systems.

The move comes as AI companies race to secure electricity for expanding computing infrastructure. Meanwhile, grid connections can take years, pushing data-center operators toward on-site natural-gas generation.

SpaceX Targets a Critical Turbine Bottleneck

Musk confirmed the foundry plan on August 29 after reports revealed SpaceX had been preparing the facility. He said the company could accelerate turbine deployment by producing the critical components internally.

However, producing these parts requires highly specialized manufacturing. Turbine blades operate under extreme temperatures and mechanical stress. Therefore, manufacturers use advanced casting techniques and specialized materials to maintain performance.

The Information reported that only a small group of companies currently produces these components at industrial scale. Moreover, existing suppliers face heavy demand as AI infrastructure expands.

AI Data Centers Drive Power Demand

At the same time, electricity has become a major constraint for AI infrastructure. Data-center developers increasingly want dedicated power sources because traditional grid connections can take too long.

Consequently, natural-gas turbines have gained attention as a faster route to additional generation. SpaceX has already used gas turbines to supply power for xAI’s Colossus facilities in Memphis.

Furthermore, SpaceX disclosed earlier this year plans for xAI to purchase $2.8 billion in natural-gas turbines over three years. The strategy highlights how closely the company’s AI ambitions now connect computing capacity with energy infrastructure.

Vertical Integration Could Shorten Deployment

For SpaceX, the foundry represents another step toward controlling critical parts of its supply chain. The company already manufactures major aerospace components internally, and turbine casting could extend that approach into energy infrastructure.

Nevertheless, building a facility capable of producing turbine blades at scale presents substantial engineering challenges. The process requires precision casting, advanced alloys, and strict quality controls.

Meanwhile, the strategy carries environmental and regulatory questions. xAI has faced lawsuits and regulatory scrutiny over gas turbines used at its Memphis-area data centers. SpaceX has said it plans to remove temporary turbines as a permanent natural-gas power plant comes online.

Ultimately, SpaceX is attempting to solve a supply-chain problem that could otherwise slow AI infrastructure growth. If the Bastrop foundry reaches industrial scale, Musk believes it could bring new gas-turbine capacity online as much as 18 months sooner.
