Sony and Rockstar Games have launched an extensive marketing campaign ahead of the November 19 release of Grand Theft Auto VI. As part of the promotion, PlayStation 5 users now see GTA 6-themed visuals across the console interface, turning the platform into a dedicated showcase for the highly anticipated game.
Starting Wednesday, PS5 owners were greeted with a custom GTA 6 animation in the Welcome Hub widget that links directly to the game’s product page. In addition, the PlayStation Store now features GTA 6 trailers and pre-order links. Meanwhile, the PlayStation App on iOS has received a refreshed icon inspired by the game’s orange-and-blue color scheme with Leonida palm tree silhouettes.
Pre-orders opened on Thursday at midnight local time. The standard edition is priced at $79.99, while the Ultimate Edition costs $99.99.
Sony also positions the PS5 as the preferred platform for GTA 6. The company highlights features such as DualSense haptic feedback, Tempest 3D AudioTech, integrated controller speaker support, and fast SSD-powered load times. Furthermore, this marks the first platform-wide visual rebrand for a third-party game during the current console generation.
Marketing Adjustments Follow Physical Edition Changes
However, the campaign faced a brief setback after Rockstar confirmed that the physical edition of GTA 6 will launch as a code-in-a-box rather than with a game disc. Consequently, Sony removed and republished its “Plays Best on PS5” promotional material after replacing an image of the disc-drive PS5 with the digital edition console. A disc version is reportedly scheduled to arrive in December.
The code-in-box approach has also drawn criticism. Some physical retailers have declined to stock the release, while collectors have expressed disappointment over paying $80 for a boxed download code. Nevertheless, customers who pre-order the physical edition can begin pre-loading the game on November 12.
Historic Launch Campaign Builds Momentum
The scale of the campaign reflects expectations that Grand Theft Auto VI will become one of the biggest entertainment launches ever. Earlier this year, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick indicated that Rockstar’s summer marketing strategy would be unlike any previous campaign.
“We never make marketing announcements during our analyst calls. Never ever”
Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A PC version is expected to arrive at a later date.
