The existing interface offers several ways to complete tasks. However, switching between sections can make it difficult to track projects or identify where work takes place.
According to an email sent to users, the company plans to introduce a more unified ChatGPT experience. Initially, selected users will gain access to the updated interface and provide feedback before a wider rollout.
A Unified Experience for Conversations and Tasks
The upcoming integration will allow users to move between everyday conversations and more complex projects without switching tabs. Furthermore, users will be able to combine files, plugins and automated workflows within the same environment.
“This will enable you to move from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it through, all in one place. You can bring in your files and plugins and ask ChatGPT to build a website, create a presentation, or do things for you on the web, while reviewing and guiding its work. Codex will remain a separate experience in the ChatGPT desktop app,” the email said.
Consequently, users could explore ideas, develop websites, prepare presentations and complete web-based tasks through one interface. Meanwhile, Codex will continue operating separately within the desktop application.
The change should also make it easier to review progress and guide ongoing projects. Additionally, users will have fewer interface boundaries between planning and execution.
Shared Token Allowance Across ChatGPT and Codex
Alongside the interface update, OpenAI plans to introduce a shared token allowance for ChatGPT and Codex. As a result, both experiences will draw from the same usage pool rather than separate allocations.
The company expects most users to experience little disruption. However, those with heavier workloads may encounter usage limits more frequently, depending on their selected models and activity.
Consequently, some users could need to wait for allowance resets more often. Nevertheless, the impact will vary according to individual usage patterns.
Growing Competition in AI Productivity
The planned integration follows a similar move by rival Anthropic. In September 2026, Anthropic combined Claude’s chat and Cowork functions into a single interface.
Similarly, OpenAI’s upcoming changes reflect a broader shift towards combining conversational AI with practical task execution. Furthermore, integrated workspaces could reduce the need to navigate multiple tools when managing projects.
Ultimately, the update aims to make ChatGPT more straightforward for users handling both simple questions and complex assignments. However, the initial feedback phase will help determine how effectively the unified experience meets those expectations.
