Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has introduced the Automatic Smart Grid Restoration System (ASGR), an advanced solution designed to improve the reliability and resilience of Dubai’s electricity distribution network. The system supports the emirate’s growing urban and economic development while helping ensure uninterrupted electricity services across the city.

The ASGR system operates through full automation and instant decision-making capabilities. As a result, DEWA can respond to network faults more quickly and restore electricity with minimal disruption to customers. Furthermore, the solution aligns with Dubai’s broader vision of building one of the world’s most reliable and sustainable energy infrastructures.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA, said: “We continue to adopt smart and advanced solutions in electricity grid management and operation, in line with the vision of the wise leadership to make Dubai a city of the future and home to some of the most reliable, efficient, and sustainable energy networks in the world.”

Automated Fault Detection and Rapid Restoration

The ASGR system automatically isolates affected feeders when outages occur. It then restores power to unaffected customers by transferring electrical loads to adjacent circuits. Consequently, the technology maintains service continuity while reducing restoration times.

In addition, the system improves fault isolation and detection accuracy. Therefore, technical teams can identify damaged sections more efficiently and resolve issues faster. DEWA has equipped substations connected to the network with intelligent electronic devices and remote terminal units that provide real-time monitoring and operational visibility.

Moreover, the authority has implemented secure peer-to-peer communication protocols between substations and the distribution control center. This capability enables reliable data exchange and supports faster operational decisions.

Advancing Self-Healing Electricity Networks

According to Al Tayer, the system strengthens grid resilience by enabling immediate responses to faults, reducing service disruptions, and accelerating restoration through real-time data and intelligent analytics. He also noted that the technology enhances business continuity and critical infrastructure readiness by creating a smart energy system capable of adapting to operational challenges.

The innovation further improves asset utilization and supports data-driven decision-making across the distribution network. At the same time, it enhances workforce safety by reducing unnecessary field interventions and increasing automation throughout network operations.

Rashid bin Humaidan, Executive Vice President of Distribution Power at DEWA, said: “This system marks a significant step forward in the transition towards smart, self-healing distribution networks. It has contributed to faster fault response times, improved reliability indicators, and enhanced service continuity for customers.”

Supporting Dubai’s Smart Energy Future

The deployment of ASGR highlights DEWA’s ongoing commitment to smart grid innovation and digital transformation. Meanwhile, the authority continues investing in advanced technologies that improve electricity network performance and customer service quality.

As Dubai’s energy demand continues to grow, intelligent systems such as ASGR will play an increasingly important role in maintaining network stability. Consequently, DEWA is strengthening its ability to deliver reliable, efficient, and sustainable electricity services while supporting Dubai’s long-term development goals.
