Apple is tightening its App Store age-rating rules to limit minors’ access to dating apps and AI companions that feature romantic or sexual interactions.
Announced on November 2, 2026, the policy requires apps offering dating or relationship features to carry a minimum age rating of 18+. The change also covers virtual companions that engage users in romantic or sexual conversations.
The updated rules will affect dating platforms, AI companion apps, and other services that offer relationship-based interactions. Moreover, Apple wants developers to provide clearer information about app features through its App Store Connect classification system.
AI Companions and Dating Apps Face New Age Restrictions
Apple’s new policy introduces a content descriptor called Dating and Relationships. It covers applications that connect real people for dating or relationships.
Importantly, the classification also includes virtual companions that engage users in sexual or romantic content. Therefore, AI applications offering virtual partners, romantic roleplay or similar interactions will face the 18+ requirement.
The rule could affect AI companion platforms such as Character.AI and Replika, depending on their features and how Apple assesses their functionality.
Furthermore, apps that offer dating as one feature among several may also receive the adult-only rating. Developers cannot avoid the classification simply because romantic interactions represent only part of an application’s services.
Developers Must Update App Store Declarations
Starting November 16, 2026, Apple will introduce two new content descriptors in App Store Connect:
-
Dating and Relationships: Identifies apps that connect people for dating or relationships, including virtual companions offering romantic or sexual interactions.
-
Shared Location: Identifies applications that share a user’s real-world location with another person or group.
Developers must answer both questions when submitting app updates or changing their age-rating information. Additionally, Apple requires every existing app to complete these declarations by January 12, 2027.
However, the two descriptors carry different age-rating requirements. Dating and relationship features automatically trigger a minimum 18+ rating.
Meanwhile, location-sharing features do not necessarily change an application’s minimum age rating in every market. Local regulations may determine additional restrictions.
For example, Brazil requires an A16 rating for apps with shared-location features and an A18 rating for dating and relationship functionality. Developers can request an alternative official rating from Brazil’s Ministry of Justice and Public Security when their applications qualify.
Apple’s Wider Effort to Protect Younger Users
The policy builds on Apple’s broader efforts to strengthen child safety and improve age assurance across its ecosystem.
Previously, the company introduced additional parental controls and age-verification measures. Now, the updated classification system will give parents clearer information about applications involving romantic interactions and location sharing.
The changes also place greater responsibility on developers to accurately disclose potentially sensitive features. As a result, developers offering general-purpose AI assistants may need to review their apps if they include romantic companion functionality.
Apple’s decision reflects growing scrutiny of AI companion platforms and how they interact with younger audiences. As conversational AI becomes more sophisticated, regulators and technology companies face increasing pressure to address privacy, age suitability and online safety.
The updated App Store requirements draw a clearer line between general AI apps and services designed for romantic or relationship-based interactions.
