Etisalat UAE has commercially launched a smartphone network technology that delivers up to three times faster upload speeds on compatible devices. The launch marks a global first for 2×2 uplink MIMO combined with carrier aggregation on smartphones. The capability operates exclusively on Etisalat UAE’s 5.5G network.
The upgrade addresses growing demand for faster data uploads. As users share high-resolution photos, videos, and large files, stronger upload performance can improve everyday mobile experiences. Moreover, faster uploads can help AI assistants and cloud services process user-provided content more quickly.
How 2×2 Uplink MIMO and Carrier Aggregation Work
The new technology combines two network techniques to increase the amount of data a smartphone can send at once.
First, 2×2 uplink Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) allows a compatible smartphone to transmit two data streams simultaneously. Meanwhile, carrier aggregation combines capacity across different frequency bands. Together, these techniques increase uplink capacity and can improve upload speeds.
Unlike traditional mobile network upgrades that often prioritise download performance, this deployment focuses on the uplink. Consequently, users can benefit when sending large files, sharing high-resolution media, or transferring content to cloud platforms.
However, the advertised improvement of up to three times represents a maximum potential gain. Actual performance will depend on device compatibility, network conditions, signal strength, and available capacity.
Faster Uploads Could Support AI and Cloud Services
The launch comes as smartphones increasingly rely on cloud-based applications and AI assistants. For example, when users ask an AI assistant to analyse a document or interpret an image, their devices must first upload that content. Therefore, stronger uplink performance could help reduce transfer delays and make these interactions more responsive.
The technology could also benefit creators who upload high-resolution videos, professionals who share large files, and users who back up photos to cloud storage. In addition, improved uplink capacity could support other data-intensive mobile applications.
Marwan Bin Shakar, Chief Technology Officer at Etisalat UAE, said smartphone use is shifting towards creating and sharing content and sending richer data to AI and cloud applications. He explained that the network upgrade aims to increase upload capacity as these activities become more common.
The rollout also reflects Etisalat UAE’s continued investment in its 5.5G network. Ultimately, the practical benefit will depend on smartphone compatibility and real-world network performance, while the technology introduces a new approach to improving mobile upload speeds in the UAE.
