Elon Musk plans to rename SpaceX’s artificial intelligence unit from SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI.
The announcement follows a broader push to replace the term “artificial intelligence” with “super intelligence.” However, Musk has not announced a timeline for the rebrand. SpaceXAI’s website and X account also continued to use the existing name when the announcement was reported.
Musk Adopts ‘Super Intelligence’ Terminology
Musk confirmed the planned name change after an X user asked whether SpaceXAI would become SpaceXSI. He responded that the company would make the change.
The proposed SpaceXSI name follows President Donald Trump’s recent shift in terminology. On September 29, Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” instead of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” in specified executive-branch communications.
The order also defines “Super Intelligence” using the existing federal definition of artificial intelligence. Therefore, the change currently represents a shift in terminology and policy rather than the creation of a separate technical category.
SpaceXAI Faces Another Brand Change
The proposed rebrand comes only months after SpaceXAI emerged from Musk’s broader consolidation of his AI operations. Reuters reported in July that SpaceXAI, formerly known as xAI, was expanding its enterprise AI efforts.
SpaceXAI has also been developing AI models and related technology. For example, the company worked with Cursor on an AI model aimed at programming and enterprise applications.
Consequently, changing the name again could give the unit a closer connection to Musk’s current view of advanced AI systems. At the same time, the move could introduce additional changes to the brand for customers and developers already familiar with SpaceXAI.
Musk has provided few details about the planned transition. In particular, he has not said whether the change will affect the unit’s products, corporate structure or development strategy.
Trump’s AI Terminology Push
The SpaceXAI announcement comes shortly after the White House introduced its new terminology. Trump’s September 29 executive order directs executive departments and agencies to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” across official correspondence, websites, reports and other non-statutory materials.
Meanwhile, Musk’s decision shows how that terminology is moving beyond federal communications. His planned SpaceXSI branding would make the new language part of one of the most prominent technology businesses associated with the AI industry.
For now, however, SpaceXAI remains the name publicly used by the unit. Musk has confirmed the planned change, but the company has yet to provide a formal transition date or further details about the SpaceXSI brand.
