Shopify Launches Canvas for AI Store Building

Shopify Canvas AI store design interface

Shopify has introduced Canvas, a new visual workspace that lets merchants build and customise online stores through conversations with its AI agent, Sidekick. The company announced Canvas on October 1, 2026.

The tool expands Shopify’s existing AI capabilities into a broader store-building environment. Previously, merchants could use Sidekick for coding, theme customisation, and app creation. However, deeper changes often required code or developer support.

Canvas Brings AI Into Store Design

Canvas displays a store’s templates in a single interactive workspace. Merchants can therefore move across pages, zoom in on individual sections, and review the overall design.

Users can also describe changes through Sidekick instead of manually editing settings. Meanwhile, Canvas displays those changes in real time. Merchants can still select individual elements and edit them directly.

Importantly, Canvas works with the actual store code rather than a static visual mockup. As a result, merchants can preview interactions, animations, products, collections and different screen sizes before publishing.

Sidekick can also review its work while building. Shopify says the agent takes screenshots, checks the results and uses that feedback to refine its changes. Furthermore, it can remember design preferences and earlier decisions during the process.

Sidekick Handles More Complex Changes

Shopify has expanded Sidekick’s ability to work directly with theme files. The company also simplified its theme architecture so the AI can better understand the store’s structure, logic and design.

The approach builds on Sidekick’s existing use across Shopify. According to Shopify, Sidekick made more than 25 million theme edits during the first half of 2026.

Consequently, merchants can ask the system to make anything from a small section change to a broader store redesign. The system then generates and validates the required theme code.

Shopify says Canvas is designed to help merchants create more customised storefronts without requiring extensive coding or design experience. However, the company describes the product as an early release and says it will continue to expand its capabilities.

Canvas Still Has Early-Stage Limits

Canvas is currently in early access and is available only to certain stores. In addition, the tool currently works only on desktop devices.

At launch, Canvas does not support third-party Shopify Theme Store themes, Markets, translations, rollouts, app blocks or app embeds. Themes edited through Canvas also do not receive regular theme updates.

The original theme remains separate when merchants duplicate a supported theme for Canvas. Therefore, changes made in Canvas do not automatically affect the original version.

Shopify is rolling Canvas out to merchants over the coming days. The company says the existing editor will remain available as it continues developing the new AI-based approach to storefront design.
