Dubai Police Uses Drones to Track Oil Spills
Dubai Police is using drones and satellite-connected technology to detect, assess and track marine pollution, including oil spills. The latest systems aim to help specialist teams respond faster and use resources more efficiently.
The technologies were showcased at the Dubai Environment Conference and Exhibition 2026 (DECE), held at Grand Hyatt Hotel Dubai from September 7 to 8. They support the work of Dubai Police’s Marine Pollution Control Centre.
Drones Support Faster Oil Spill Assessment
One showcased solution is a sampling drone developed by the Marine Pollution Control Center with the Drone Center. The drone can collect samples from reported pollution sites and support an initial assessment.
As a result, specialists can assess an incident before sending boats or other equipment to the site. The information can help teams determine the scale of the response and identify required resources.
Dubai Police also presented a larger drone designed to spray dispersant over oil spills. The aircraft can carry approximately 40 liters of dispersant. Moreover, it can reach areas that may prove difficult for boats to access.
Therefore, the airborne system gives response teams greater flexibility during marine pollution incidents. It can also support faster intervention when an oil spill requires immediate action.
Satellite Buoy Tracks Spill Movement
Dubai Police also displayed a specialised marine buoy connected to satellite technology. The buoy is designed to follow an oil spill while continuously transmitting its location.
As a result, specialist teams can monitor the spill’s movement and direction as conditions change. The tracking data can help teams maintain a clearer picture of the affected area over time.
Together, the drone and satellite systems can shorten assessment times and support operational decisions. They also help teams determine whether boats, equipment and other resources need to be deployed.
