Google Adds AI Voice Features Across Workspace
Google has begun rolling out new AI voice capabilities across Gmail, Google Docs and Google Keep. The company announced the wider availability on September 3, 2026.
The new tools use Gemini to let users interact with Workspace apps through natural conversation. Moreover, users can search emails, create documents and organize notes without relying on traditional typing.
The features include Gmail Live, Docs Live and Keep Live. Google first introduced them at Google I/O in May before making them broadly available this week.
Gmail Live Brings Conversational Inbox Search
Gmail Live lets users ask spoken questions about information stored in their inbox. Instead of manually searching through email threads, users can ask Gemini for specific details.
For example, users can ask about travel details or recent updates in their messages. Gmail Live then searches relevant emails and provides a synthesized response.
Furthermore, the interface displays a live transcript during the conversation. It also provides links to the source emails, allowing users to check the information behind an answer.
Users can also ask follow-up questions without repeating the original context. In addition, they can interrupt the conversation and change topics without starting another session.
Gmail Live is rolling out globally in English on Android and iOS. It is available to subscribers of Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra.
Docs Live Turns Voice Into Drafts
Docs Live focuses on hands-free writing and document creation. Users can speak through ideas, brainstorm topics and describe the document they want to create.
Gemini can then organize those thoughts into a structured first draft. Moreover, users can use additional voice instructions to refine the document and adjust its tone.
With permission, Docs Live can also draw relevant information from Gmail, Drive, Chat and the web. Therefore, users can incorporate existing context while developing a new document.
The feature could support tasks such as proposals, summaries and other business documents. However, access is currently more limited than Gmail Live.
Docs Live is available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers on Android and iOS in English. Google also plans to bring these capabilities to Workspace business customers.
Keep Live Organizes Spoken Thoughts
Google Keep is also gaining a voice-driven workflow through Keep Live. Users can speak freely and let Gemini convert those thoughts into organized notes and lists.
For instance, a spoken request involving several items can be structured as a checklist. As a result, users can capture ideas without first manually organizing their thoughts.
Keep Live is initially rolling out on Android in English. Meanwhile, Google is making Gmail Live and Docs Live available across Android and iOS.
The rollout marks another step in Google’s effort to make Workspace more conversational. Instead of treating voice as simple dictation, these features allow Gemini to interpret requests and act within individual Workspace applications.
For now, the tools remain tied to Google AI subscription tiers. Google says Workspace business customers will also receive access, although the company has not announced a specific business rollout date.
