OpenAI Expands Free AI Access for Researchers
OpenAI has launched a new initiative called ChatGPT for Academic Researchers, offering 100,000 scientists, mathematicians, and engineers free access to its frontier AI models through 2027. The program begins with 10,000 researchers this summer before expanding to its full scale. Consequently, OpenAI aims to accelerate scientific discovery by providing advanced AI tools to researchers tackling complex problems across science, engineering, and mathematics.
The initiative provides access to OpenAI’s latest frontier models, including the GPT-5.6 family at launch. Moreover, each researcher can invite up to four collaborators from the same institution, enabling teams to work together in secure research environments. OpenAI stated that researcher data will not be used to train its AI models by default, while business-grade privacy and security protections will safeguard research projects.

The program targets qualifying researchers at selected degree-granting institutions with strong research activity. Therefore, OpenAI hopes to make frontier AI accessible beyond well-funded laboratories and technology companies. Participants will also receive training resources, hands-on support, and opportunities to collaborate with other researchers using the platform.
Researchers can use the AI models to prepare grant applications, analyze datasets, generate code, review scientific literature, test hypotheses, and accelerate experimental workflows. The new initiative forms part of OpenAI’s commitment to invest more than $250 million in external scientific research through 2027. OpenAI reported that approximately 1.3 million people already use ChatGPT each week for advanced science and mathematics. Furthermore, academic use continues to grow rapidly, with papers acknowledging ChatGPT’s contribution increasing significantly across research disciplines. The company believes wider access to frontier AI can accelerate breakthroughs in medicine, physics, engineering, climate science, and other fields.
