Meta has started rolling out its Meta AI assistant inside Threads direct messages (DMs), giving users worldwide the ability to chat privately with the AI without leaving the app. Previously, users in select markets could only interact with Meta AI by mentioning it in public Threads conversations. Consequently, the new feature expands Meta AI’s role from public engagement to private, one-on-one interactions.
The rollout allows users to send posts, images, links, and videos directly to Meta AI within Threads DMs. Moreover, they can ask follow-up questions, summarize shared content, brainstorm ideas, or seek explanations while remaining inside the messaging interface. Meta said the update responds to community feedback from users who wanted AI assistance in a private setting instead of public conversations.
Private AI Conversations Come to Threads
The new DM integration mirrors Meta AI experiences already available on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. Therefore, Threads users now have consistent AI capabilities across Meta’s major social platforms. The assistant can answer questions, provide recommendations, explain posts, and continue conversations through contextual follow-up prompts.
Unlike the earlier beta, which required users to tag Meta AI in public posts or replies, the latest rollout enables entirely private conversations. As a result, users can explore topics, request writing assistance, or analyze shared media without exposing their interactions to others.
Expanding Meta’s AI Ecosystem
Meta continues integrating its AI assistant across its family of applications as part of a broader strategy to increase engagement and keep users within its ecosystem. Furthermore, Threads recently surpassed 500 million monthly active users, making the platform an increasingly important destination for Meta AI services.
The company has steadily expanded Meta AI beyond chatbots by introducing features such as AI-powered search, content generation, automation, and contextual assistance. Consequently, the Threads DM rollout strengthens Meta’s position in the competitive AI assistant market alongside offerings from OpenAI, Google, xAI, and Microsoft.
Building a More Intelligent Social Experience
The latest update reflects Meta’s vision of embedding AI into everyday social interactions rather than offering it as a standalone application. In addition, private AI conversations may encourage more users to experiment with the assistant for productivity, creativity, and information discovery.
As the global rollout continues, Meta AI is expected to become a core feature of the Threads experience. Therefore, users will increasingly rely on the assistant to understand content, generate ideas, and manage conversations directly within the platform’s messaging environment.
