OpenAI is broadening its consumer strategy by hiring a product manager to develop ChatGPT experiences for families, caregivers, and older adults. The San Francisco-based position offers a base salary between $293,000 and $325,000, making it the company’s first role dedicated specifically to household users.

Growing focus on mainstream users

The new position requires at least seven years of product management experience, particularly in products designed for families, parents, or trust-sensitive environments. Additionally, the successful candidate will shape the strategy for family-focused ChatGPT features from planning through launch while working closely with engineering, design, research, policy, and legal teams.

Meanwhile, ChatGPT adoption continues to accelerate across different age groups. Recent research shows that 55% of U.S. adults aged 30 to 49 have used ChatGPT, up from 27% in 2024. Likewise, usage among adults aged 50 to 64 has increased from 17% to 37% during the same period. Furthermore, OpenAI previously reported that consumer growth expanded across age groups in early 2026, with the strongest gains coming from users over 35.

Family features could drive future growth

The new hiring effort highlights an area that many AI competitors have yet to prioritize. Although Google and Meta have integrated AI into their products, neither company has introduced dedicated AI experiences for families. Similarly, Amazon remains a leader in household AI through Alexa, yet its voice assistant has not matched ChatGPT’s conversational capabilities.

OpenAI already introduced parental controls that allow parents to link their accounts with a teenager’s account and adjust safety settings. Now, the company appears ready to expand beyond child safety by exploring shared family accounts, simplified experiences for older adults, and caregiver tools for managing medical information.

At the same time, the business opportunity is significant. With ChatGPT reaching 900 million weekly active users as of February 2026, OpenAI aims to convert more free users into paid subscribers. Consequently, a family-focused offering could encourage household subscriptions by providing practical AI tools without requiring technical expertise or complex prompting. Although balancing the needs of parents, caregivers, and older adults may prove challenging, the new role suggests OpenAI sees future growth extending well beyond workplaces and into everyday home life.
