ROG XBOX Ally X20 handheld console

Asus has introduced the ROG XBOX Ally X20, a limited-edition gaming handheld celebrating the 20th anniversary of its Republic of Gamers brand. The new model builds on the ROG XBOX Ally X while adding several hardware upgrades. These include a 7.4-inch OLED display, TMR joysticks, and a redesigned D-pad. Additionally, Asus bundles the handheld with the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 Gaming AR Glasses.

The handheld runs on AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor and includes 24GB of LPDDR5X memory alongside 1TB of PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage. Moreover, the anniversary edition features a translucent black chassis with gold-coloured internal accents.

OLED display and upgraded controls

The ROG XBOX Ally X20 becomes the first Ally-series handheld to feature an OLED display. It offers a 7.4-inch Full HD ROG Nebula HDR panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, FreeSync Premium Pro support, Dolby Vision support, and peak brightness of up to 1,400 nits. Furthermore, Asus says the display carries VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certification and delivers a 0.2ms response time.

According to the company, Corning DXC glass with an anti-reflective coating helps minimise glare. Meanwhile, Asus has redesigned the cooling system to improve heat management around both the OLED panel and processor.

The handheld combines the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor with 24GB LPDDR5X RAM and 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage. In addition, it supports Auto SR preview, which upscales lower-resolution game frames for sharper visuals and smoother gameplay.

Asus has also upgraded the control system. The new TMR joysticks aim to improve precision while reducing joystick drift. Meanwhile, the Transforming D-pad switches between four-way and eight-way directional controls, making it better suited for fighting games. The company has also refined the face buttons and added a rubberised coating to the rear grips for improved comfort during longer gaming sessions.

ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 AR Glasses

The bundle includes the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 Gaming AR Glasses, which use dual micro-OLED displays to function as an external screen for the handheld. AR glasses project digital content such as text, video, and 3D graphics into the user’s real-world view.

According to Asus, the glasses can project a virtual display measuring up to 171 inches when viewed from four metres away. They also support refresh rates of up to 240Hz and offer a response time of 0.01ms.

Additionally, the glasses feature native 3DoF tracking, allowing the virtual display to move with the user’s head. Alternatively, users can enable Anchor Mode to keep the virtual screen fixed in one position while gaming or watching content. The glasses connect through a single USB Type-C cable and integrate with Asus’ Command Center controls.

Availability and MSI rivalry

Asus announced the ROG XBOX Ally X20 Bundle on June 1 as part of the Republic of Gamers’ 20th anniversary celebrations. However, the company has not revealed pricing or availability details. It also remains unclear whether the bundle will launch in India.

Meanwhile, MSI recently showcased the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ ahead of its reported June 23 launch. The company says it will become the first handheld powered by Intel’s Arc G3 Extreme processor. It will also feature an 8-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate and variable refresh rate (VRR) support.

Intel recently introduced the Arc G3 Extreme processor to compete with AMD’s Ryzen Z-series chips used in devices such as the Asus ROG Ally and the new ROG XBOX Ally X20. As a result, the two handhelds are expected to compete directly.

MSI has also added a full-screen Xbox mode, offering a controller-friendly Windows 11 interface for a console-like gaming experience. Moreover, the handheld features redesigned ergonomic controls, Hall-effect triggers and thumbsticks, a new vibration motor for enhanced haptics, and support for Intel technologies including XeSS 3 and Multi-Frame Generation. The device will be available in a Void Purple colour option. However, MSI has not yet announced pricing or market availability.
