Amazon has announced a new division under its cloud computing business, Amazon Web Services (AWS), to help customers adopt artificial intelligence software more quickly. The company will deploy specialized forward-deployed engineers who work directly with clients to implement AI solutions.

Additionally, Amazon has committed an initial investment of $1 billion for the initiative. The company plans to send five to six engineering teams to customer sites for 45-day engagements. These engineers will work closely with customers to accelerate AI adoption, implement agentic AI workflows and deliver production-ready solutions.

Demand for AI engineering roles continues to rise

Although Amazon is entering the space later than some competitors, forward-deployed engineering has become an increasingly important service across the technology industry. Companies including Palantir Technologies, Salesforce, Anthropic and Google Cloud already offer similar customer-focused engineering teams.

Meanwhile, demand for these specialists has grown rapidly despite broader workforce reductions across the tech sector. A LinkedIn report found that demand for forward-deployed engineers and similar roles increased 42-fold between 2023 and 2025.

AWS said the new division will eventually include thousands of employees. The company also plans to hire both external candidates and existing employees to fill the roles. However, Amazon has eliminated more than 30,000 corporate positions since October.

Initial customers include NBA and Ricoh

Amazon introduced the new division during a two-day customer event in Washington, where it is also expected to announce additional government cloud offerings.

The company will measure the initiative’s success by how quickly customers can develop new products and adopt AI capabilities with the support of embedded engineering teams.

Initially, AWS will provide the service to customers including the National Basketball Association and electronics company Ricoh.
