Google Launches Free Gemini AI Tutor for Students

Google Gemini AI tutoring interface

Google introduced a range of AI-powered education features during the ISTE 2026 conference, expanding the capabilities of the Gemini app for both students and educators. The updates include free study notebooks, a connected Classroom app, and new AI-assisted teaching tools that aim to personalize learning while giving teachers greater control over classroom support.

Study Notebooks Turn Gemini Into a Personal Tutor

The highlight of the announcement is Study Notebooks, a free feature that transforms Gemini into an adaptive AI tutor. Students can create a notebook by setting a learning goal or uploading lecture notes, presentation slides, or PDF documents. Gemini then generates a diagnostic quiz to identify knowledge gaps before creating a personalized study plan with bite-sized lessons.

As students continue learning, Gemini adjusts the study plan based on quiz performance. Consequently, learners receive content that focuses on areas where they need the most improvement. Additionally, a skills dashboard tracks more than 100 learning objectives and categorizes each one as a strength, focus area, or not yet started.

The feature is now available for free through the Gemini web app in every supported language. Meanwhile, mobile access and support for school-managed accounts are expected later this summer.

Google also confirmed that free full-length GRE and ACT practice tests will launch during the summer of 2026. The company developed the tests in partnership with The Princeton Review, extending a collaboration that introduced free SAT practice tests to Gemini earlier this year.

Connected Classroom App Offers AI Support for Teachers

Alongside the student-focused tools, Google introduced a connected Classroom app inside Gemini for educators. The feature uses existing assignments, grades, and classroom materials to help teachers review student performance and create personalized learning activities.

As a result, educators can quickly identify students who may need additional support or recognize topics that require further instruction. Moreover, they can complete these tasks without leaving the Gemini interface, making classroom management more efficient.

Google also revealed plans for a Google Classroom Model Context Protocol server. The platform will allow external educational technology services to securely access Classroom data, helping schools maintain unified workflows across multiple tools.

Teacher-Guided AI Features Continue to Expand

In the coming months, Google will expand teacher-led AI experiences across Guided Learning in Gemini, Study Notebooks, and NotebookLM within Google Classroom. Therefore, instructors will be able to assign AI-supported activities while maintaining visibility into how students interact with the technology.

“When teachers actively guide AI use, the results are clear,” wrote Brittany Mennuti, product lead for Google Classroom, in the company’s blog post announcing the features.
