Ooredoo Qatar Launches Nation’s First Quantum-Safe Communications Link

Ooredoo Qatar has launched the first quantum-safe communications link in Qatar through a collaboration with Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) and the Ministry of Defense. The initiative introduces a fully operational end-to-end communications system powered by Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technology.

The project supports the advancement of cybersecurity capabilities across the country. Moreover, it aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen secure communications infrastructure for future digital needs.

According to the company, the deployment marks the first implementation of its kind in Qatar. Furthermore, the system generates and distributes encryption keys using the principles of quantum mechanics. Unlike conventional encryption methods, Quantum Key Distribution can detect attempts to intercept communications. As a result, organizations gain an additional layer of protection for sensitive data transmission.

The quantum-safe link operates within Ooredoo Qatar’s live network environment. In addition, it builds on research conducted by HBKU in partnership with ID Quantique (IDQ), a provider of quantum-safe security technologies. Together, the partners developed a Quantum Key Distribution testbed compatible with existing telecommunications infrastructure.

Collaboration Drives Secure Connectivity Innovation

Thani Ali Al Malki, Chief Strategy and Digital Transformation Officer at Ooredoo Qatar, stated that the project reflects cooperation among national institutions in supporting secure and future-ready connectivity.

Al Malki noted that the deployment of quantum-safe technologies within operational telecommunications networks contributes to the continued development of cybersecurity capabilities that support modern digital infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Al Zaidan, Senior Director of Active and Core Network at Ooredoo Qatar, highlighted that the project used Ooredoo’s dark-fiber infrastructure. He added that engineering teams successfully validated secure key generation and distribution across multiple fiber-link distances during deployment.

Furthermore, Al Zaidan stated that collaboration with HBKU’s Qatar Center for Quantum Computing and the Ministry of Defense enabled the successful implementation of the project. Consequently, the initiative demonstrates the practical application of quantum-safe networking technologies within a live telecommunications environment.

National Partnership Strengthens Cybersecurity Capabilities

Dr. Saif Al Kuwari, Director of the Qatar Center for Quantum Computing at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, commented that the center’s approach is based on collaboration between government entities, academic institutions, and industry partners.

Similarly, Maj. Gen. Zayed Ahmed Al Kuwari, Commander of the Qatar Emiri Signal Corps, described the project as a reflection of joint efforts to develop secure digital infrastructure and strengthen cybersecurity capabilities.

The initiative combines expertise from the telecommunications, research, and defense sectors. Ooredoo Qatar enabled the deployment and testing of the technology within its operational network, thereby demonstrating compatibility with existing telecommunications systems.

At the same time, HBKU led the scientific research and system integration efforts while helping develop local expertise in quantum technologies. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defense supported the initiative as a strategic stakeholder, highlighting the growing importance of secure communications in supporting national priorities.
