ChatGPT has become the fastest application in history to reach 1 billion global monthly active app users. The AI chatbot achieved the milestone in May, roughly three years after its launch in November 2022. As a result, it surpassed the growth pace of several major platforms, including Google Maps, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.
The platform’s rise has been exceptionally rapid. It attracted 1 million users within five days of launch and reached 100 million monthly active users in just two months. Furthermore, the company revealed in February 2026 that ChatGPT had grown to 900 million weekly active users and 50 million paying subscribers.
Competition in the AI Market Intensifies
Meanwhile, competition in the artificial intelligence sector continues to grow. Claude, developed by Anthropic, remains ChatGPT’s closest competitor. According to market estimates, Claude recorded 56 million global monthly active app users during the second quarter to date.
Moreover, Claude’s year-over-year growth reached approximately 640 percent, significantly exceeding ChatGPT’s 62 percent growth rate over the same period. At the same time, user behavior data suggests increasing competition between the two platforms. U.S. users who installed Claude during the first quarter of 2026 spent 5 percent less time on ChatGPT one month later compared to their average usage over the previous eight months.
AI Leaders Move Closer to Public Listings
As the AI race accelerates, both companies are taking steps toward public markets. Anthropic confidentially filed for a U.S. initial public offering earlier this week. Likewise, reports indicate that OpenAI is preparing to submit its own IPO filing in the coming weeks.
Consequently, the battle for market leadership is expanding beyond user growth and product development. Investors are now closely watching how leading AI firms position themselves for the next phase of expansion.
