Ooredoo Group has partnered with du to land the Fibre in the Gulf (FIG) subsea cable system in the UAE. As a result, the project moves closer to building a large-scale international connectivity platform for the region’s expanding digital economy.
Moreover, the FIG system represents the largest subsea cable network ever developed in the GCC. The infrastructure will deliver up to 720Tbps of capacity through 24 fibre pairs. Consequently, the network will support rising demand from hyperscalers, cloud providers, AI platforms, and data centre operators.
Supporting Data and AI Growth
The subsea cable system will connect Qatar, the UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, and Oman. Therefore, the project aims to improve low-latency data transfer and strengthen regional digital infrastructure.
In addition, the network will help support growing enterprise workloads, AI-driven services, and cloud expansion across the Gulf region. The system also seeks to improve resilience and scalability for international connectivity as digital traffic continues to increase.
Ooredoo Expands Infrastructure Strategy
Ooredoo Fibre Networks (OFN) is leading the FIG project. Recently, Ooredoo Group established an independent entity to manage and expand its subsea and international connectivity investments under the leadership of CEO Khalid Al Hamadi.
Furthermore, the latest partnership in the UAE follows progress at several regional landing points. The project also aligns with broader efforts to strengthen digital infrastructure and support long-term economic and technological growth across the GCC.
