Elon Musk Says Neuralink Could Restore Hearing for Deaf People

Elon Musk says Neuralink could eventually restore hearing for deaf individuals. Specifically, he explained that the technology would stimulate the auditory cortex directly. As a result, the system could bypass the ear entirely and send signals straight to the brain.

Moreover, he compared this concept to the company’s Blindsight implant. That device aims to restore vision by transmitting visual data to the brain’s visual cortex. Therefore, the same principle could extend to hearing restoration.

Previously, Musk noted that the brain chip might help even those born without hearing. In that case, the implant would deliver signals directly to the brain’s auditory processing center. Consequently, this approach builds on Neuralink’s broader goal of restoring lost sensory functions.

Growth in Trials and Technology

Meanwhile, Neuralink continues to expand its clinical trials and technical capabilities. In early 2026, the company reported 21 participants in global trials, up from 12 in 2025. At the same time, its first patient, Noland Arbaugh, demonstrated the implant’s potential. He used it to play video games, browse the web, and control a cursor with his thoughts.

Additionally, the company reported no serious device-related complications so far. As confidence grows, Neuralink plans to scale production in 2026. Musk also stated that the surgical process will become highly automated. Consequently, thread insertion time could drop to just 1.5 seconds per thread.

Furthermore, the company secured significant funding to support expansion. This financial backing enables continued development and broader testing across multiple applications.

Moving Beyond Movement

Beyond mobility, Neuralink is advancing into speech and vision restoration. For example, a patient named Kenneth received an implant targeting the speech cortex. As a result, the system can decode imagined speech and convert it into audible output.

In addition, the vision-focused Blindsight device has already received regulatory recognition. Although early results may offer limited resolution, improvements are expected over time. Musk noted that initial vision could resemble “Atari graphics,” yet it may eventually surpass natural sight.

Ultimately, Neuralink is evolving into a platform for comprehensive neurological restoration. However, each new application introduces technical and regulatory challenges. Still, as research progresses, the company continues to push the boundaries of brain-computer interface technology.
