Dubai RTA Installs Smart Pedestrian Signals at 27 Locations to Boost Road Safety

The latest phase added 10 new intersections, including areas along Omar Bin Al Khattab Street, Al Satwa Street, and Oud Metha Street, enhancing safety at high-traffic pedestrian zones, especially near schools and labor accommodations.

According to Mohammed Al Ali, Director of Intelligent Traffic Systems at RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, the smart pedestrian signals use intelligent thermal cameras that detect pedestrian movement in real-time, even in low-light conditions. These systems work 24/7 and integrate with push-button devices to optimize crossing efficiency and signal timing.

The adaptive technology also adjusts signal duration based on pedestrian speed, ensuring safer crossings for children, seniors, and People of Determination while reducing unnecessary traffic delays.

The RTA says this initiative aligns with Dubai’s vision to lead in smart mobility and infrastructure innovation. With positive early results showing increased safety at the upgraded intersections, this expansion marks a key step in transforming how the city manages urban pedestrian traffic.
