Electric vehicle (EV) adoption is accelerating across Dubai. By the end of Q1 2025, the number of EVs surpassed 39,000 marking a 5.41% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This growth reflects rising public interest and policy support for eco-friendly transportation.
The Green Charger initiative by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has played a major role. Since its 2015 launch, the program has delivered more than 39,159 megawatt-hours of electricity. That energy helped EVs travel a combined 195 million kilometers within the emirate.
According to HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, charging sessions increased by 23.6% in Q1 2025 over Q1 2024. This progress strongly supports the UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategy and the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030. Both initiatives aim to cut carbon emissions while boosting Dubai’s global standing in sustainable transport.
Expanding Charging Infrastructure and Services
As EV demand climbs, charging infrastructure has rapidly expanded. DEWA and its licensed charge point operators (CPOs) now operate over 1,100 charging points across Dubai. Importantly, these stations are available 24/7 and strategically placed for convenience.
DEWA’s Green Charger network includes four types of chargers: ultra-fast, fast, public, and wall-box. Locations are easy to find using DEWA’s website, mobile app, or 14 other digital platforms. Once a vehicle is registered with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), DEWA automatically creates an EV Green Charger account for the owner. As a result, registered users can often charge their vehicles in under an hour.
Even users without an account can charge through the guest mode feature at Green Charger stations. This flexibility ensures wider access and supports growing EV use across all user groups.
User Growth and Public Support Continue Rising
From just 14 users in 2015, DEWA’s EV Green Charger program now supports 20,903 registered users as of Q1 2025. This growth mirrors broader trends in public interest.
A recent Toluna survey found that 73% of UAE residents now prefer electric vehicles. Clearly, DEWA’s ongoing efforts in expanding its network and optimizing services are in line with market expectations.
While challenges remain, the current momentum suggests that Dubai is on a strong path toward a cleaner, smarter transportation future.
