UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment Releases Comprehensive Guide on Single-Use Plastic Regulations
DUBAI, 2nd January, 2025 (WAM) — The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) has unveiled a detailed guide outlining regulations for single-use plastic products, in line with Ministerial Decision No. 380 of 2022. This initiative aims to promote eco-friendly alternatives and reduce plastic pollution across the UAE.
Engineer Alia Abdul Rahim Al Harmoudi, Assistant Undersecretary for the Sustainable Communities Sector, emphasized that the guide is a vital resource for manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers. It advocates for sustainable practices by providing clear directions to transition away from single-use plastics.
Ministerial Decision No. 380 of 2022, which took effect on January 1, 2024, prohibits the import, production, and trade of single-use shopping bags, including those labeled as biodegradable. It also establishes guidelines for reusable bags, requiring them to be washable, free from harmful substances, and compliant with UAE technical standards.
The guide is part of the UAE’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding the environment and fostering sustainable practices across various sectors.
