Elon Musk: Twitter to use AI against public opinion manipulation

Twitter’s CEO, Elon Musk, announced on Saturday that the company plans to use artificial intelligence (AI) to combat the manipulation of public opinion on the social media platform. The billionaire did not provide any specifics on how this will be done, but he stated in a tweet that it will occur “in the months ahead.” Twitter did not respond to requests for further comments on the matter.

It remains unclear whether this initiative is linked to Musk’s reported formation of a team, including a former engineer at a Google parent Alphabet unit, to develop a rival to OpenAI’s text-based chatbot ChatGPT. According to a recent report from The Information, he was in talks with Igor Babuschkin, who recently left DeepMind AI, to lead a group of artificial intelligence researchers in the effort.

Musk, who has a net worth of $169 billion and more than 131.8 million followers on Twitter, has often been known for being a prolific and controversial user of the platform. He has advocated for free speech on Twitter, which has led to concerns about the spread of fake news and disinformation.

To address these fears, Musk has implemented changes to the platform, such as revamping Twitter’s blue check verification system. His latest announcement about using AI is another step towards combating manipulation on the platform.

This move by Musk follows criticism that he allegedly adjusted Twitter’s recommendation algorithm to increase the reach of his tweets. He also stated that Twitter’s algorithm for recommending tweets will be made public on March 31, an information that was previously guarded by the company, in a bid to build trust with users.

“Providing code transparency will be incredibly embarrassing at first, but it should lead to rapid improvement in recommendation quality. Most importantly, we hope to earn your trust,” he tweeted.
