Apple Music has announced the launch of a dedicated classical music app called “Apple Music Classical,” which will be available as a standalone app from March 28th. The app will feature a library of five million tracks and provide a unique listening experience with exclusive albums, advanced search functions, and high-quality audio streaming.
According to Apple, the app will provide “the world’s largest classical music catalogue” and will compete with other streaming services exclusively dedicated to classical music, such as German-based Idagio, which is currently the only subscription-based platform for classical audio streaming. The app’s advanced search function, which is not available on other classical music apps, will allow users to search by composer, genre, instrument, mood, and more.
Apple’s move into the classical music streaming market was first anticipated in 2021, when the company acquired Primephonic, an Amsterdam-based platform solely focused on the classical music genre. Apple’s Vice President of Apple Music and Beats, Oliver Schusser, stated that the company would provide “a dedicated classical experience that will truly be the best in the world” after the acquisition.
The new app will come at no additional cost to Apple Music subscribers and will soon be available on Android-based devices. This move comes as Apple seeks to differentiate itself from competitors like Spotify by offering a unique music streaming experience tailored to the specific needs and interests of its users.
