The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) has announced the launch date for the second mission of the UAE Astronaut Programme, which is set to take place no earlier than February 26th, 2023. The mission, named Crew-6, will involve Sultan Al Neyadi and two other astronauts, who will be launched into space aboard the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Once on the International Space Station (ISS), Sultan will become a flight engineer for Expedition 69 and will conduct various in-depth scientific experiments as part of the UAE Astronaut Programme. This program was established by the MBRSC with the goal of establishing the UAE’s infrastructure for human space exploration, training and preparing Emirati astronauts to carry out scientific missions, and developing the capabilities of these astronauts to operate the ISS.
To share the details of the mission, an elaborate media and public conference has been scheduled for January 25th, at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. The conference will feature a public address from Salem Al Marri, Director-General of MBRSC, who will provide further insight into the objectives and goals of the mission.
The UAE Astronaut Programme is one of the most inspiring projects aimed at meeting the aspirations of young people with unique scientific capacities and personal skills. It is also funded by the ICT Fund of the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA), which aims to support research and development in the ICT sector in the UAE. The program is a key component of the UAE’s efforts to advance human space exploration and scientific research and to establish the country’s position as a leading player in the global space industry.
