BMW has become the first automaker to integrate its vehicle configurator directly into ChatGPT. As a result, customers can build and customize a vehicle through natural conversations instead of navigating traditional online menus.
The new plugin allows users to describe their ideal vehicle using everyday language. They can specify preferences such as powertrain, ground clearance, interior space, or color. Then, the tool recommends matching BMW models and configurations before directing users to the official build page to complete their purchase.
AI Simplifies the Car Buying Experience
The configurator is available through the ChatGPT Plugins menu on both desktop and mobile devices. Furthermore, users can refine their selections through follow-up conversations, making the vehicle customization process more interactive and personalized.
The plugin forms part of BMW’s broader artificial intelligence strategy. Earlier this year, the company introduced an in-car intelligent personal assistant based on Amazon’s Alexa+ architecture. That assistant can understand natural language, process multiple commands in one sentence, and is expected to debut in the BMW iX3 in the United States and Germany during the second half of 2026.
A New Digital Sales Channel for Automakers
Unlike traditional online configurators, the ChatGPT plugin reaches customers within an AI platform they already use. Consequently, it reduces the need to visit a dedicated website before exploring vehicle options.
Meanwhile, the launch reflects the growing role of conversational AI in automotive retail. As more companies expand AI-powered services, manufacturers are exploring new ways to engage digital-first buyers. Therefore, BMW’s move could encourage other automakers to adopt similar conversational shopping experiences.
What’s Next?
The plugin is now available through ChatGPT, giving customers a new way to explore and customize vehicles. If adoption grows, conversational AI could become an increasingly important channel for vehicle discovery, configuration, and future online sales.
