Zuckerberg Hiring New Team to Develop ‘Superintelligence’ AI: Report

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Platforms, is forming a specialized team aimed at developing artificial general intelligence (AGI)—technology designed to equal or surpass human thinking. According to Bloomberg News, this initiative is unfolding alongside Meta’s plans to invest over $10 billion in Scale AI. Once the deal is finalized, Scale AI’s founder, Alexandr Wang, is expected to join the AGI group. Although Reuters has yet to confirm these developments independently, the momentum suggests a strategic pivot for Meta’s AI ambitions.

While Meta has not officially commented on the report, the move appears closely tied to internal dissatisfaction with recent AI progress. Meta’s latest large language model, Llama 4, did not meet expectations, leading to a lukewarm reception. As a result, Zuckerberg has taken a more hands-on approach, reportedly seeking to personally hire about 50 experts, including a new head of AI research for the AGI initiative.

Challenges with Current AI Models

Concerns about Meta’s AI trajectory were further underscored last month when the company postponed the release of its advanced “Behemoth” AI model. The Wall Street Journal indicated that internal worries about the model’s performance played a significant role in the delay. Consequently, Meta appears determined to address these issues by redirecting its talent and capital toward AGI development.

Transitioning from traditional machine learning systems to AGI is no small task. However, the urgency within Meta mirrors similar efforts across the industry. While Zuckerberg’s ambitions are bold, they align with a broader trend of major tech firms racing to achieve AGI. OpenAI, for instance, is also making structural adjustments to draw in more investment and sharpen its focus on advanced AI research.

Competitive Pressure Driving AGI Push

Industry-wide competition is undoubtedly accelerating this shift. As rivals push forward, companies like Meta feel increasing pressure to innovate quickly. Zuckerberg’s decision to create a new team and collaborate with prominent figures like Wang may help Meta regain its edge in the AI space. Furthermore, the substantial investment into Scale AI signals Meta’s long-term commitment to evolving beyond traditional AI.

If successful, these moves could redefine Meta’s role in the AI landscape. But for now, the focus remains on assembling the right people, allocating resources strategically, and navigating the complex path toward artificial general intelligence.
