Google I/O 2025 kicks off on May 20, but Android fans won’t have to wait long for updates. A dedicated Android Show will air a week earlier, on May 13. This pre-event stream will feature Sameer Samat, Android Ecosystem President, and promises exciting news. For instance, Android 16 is expected to debut with features like “Ongoing notifications,” similar to iOS Live Activities. Additionally, Google may introduce a cloud-friendly photo picker that enhances user access to stored media.
Meanwhile, Google isn’t giving up on extended reality (XR). After past efforts like Google Glass and Daydream fizzled out, Android XR appears to mark a fresh start. With Gemini AI powering its ambitions, Google has teamed up with Samsung on a headset dubbed Project Moohan. While a release window is still unconfirmed, a live demo or detailed update could happen during I/O. It’s clear Google is aiming to establish a serious presence in the XR space this time.
AI Everywhere at I/O 2025
AI remains the heartbeat of Google’s evolution. Since splitting off Android into a separate event, Google has signaled that I/O 2025 will lean heavily into artificial intelligence. For starters, AI Overviews and AI Mode are likely to get major enhancements. On top of that, many are anticipating news on Project Mariner, Google’s AI-powered web browsing agent first teased in 2024.
Another potential highlight is Project Astra. Introduced last year, this Gemini-powered voice assistant integrates image recognition, enabling it to talk about what it sees. While the initial demo was impressive, feedback suggested the tech needed refining. Still, it wouldn’t be surprising if Google shares improvements or a roadmap for Astra’s development.
More from Wear OS, NotebookLM, and Possible Surprises
Wear OS might finally get some attention this year. Although it was barely mentioned at I/O 2024, Google has hinted at news in the Android Show. Users can expect updates about Wear OS 5.1 or possibly a future iteration.
NotebookLM, the AI-powered note-taking tool, is also expanding. Already available on desktops, it’s poised for a mobile release right at the start of I/O 2025.
Although leaks are common at Google, surprises aren’t entirely out of the question. As always, following the event closely on May 20 and 21 will reveal all the latest announcements.
