The UAE has taken a major step in strengthening its drug control framework with the launch of the National Anti-Narcotics Authority. Announced through a federal decree-law by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Authority will replace the General Department of Anti-Narcotics in the Ministry of Interior. Sheikh Zayed bin Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nahyan has been appointed as its chairman.

This move underscores the country’s ongoing efforts to safeguard public health and security by tackling the complex challenges of drug-related crimes. The Authority will serve as the central body responsible for creating policies, coordinating enforcement, and advancing legislative frameworks to address narcotics issues nationwide.

Centralized Control for Enforcement and Rehabilitation

At the heart of the Authority’s mandate is the disruption of drug trafficking networks. To this end, it will collaborate with judicial and security bodies to investigate, dismantle, and prosecute those involved in smuggling operations. In addition, the Authority will manage national inspections across all border points land, sea, and air to intercept drugs before they infiltrate society.

Equally important, the Authority will supervise the treatment and rehabilitation of addicts. It aims to integrate medical care, recovery programs, and social reintegration initiatives. Furthermore, it will conduct studies and publish research to enhance understanding of addiction trends and support evidence-based policymaking.

To address the use of chemical precursors, the Authority will introduce licensing protocols and trading regulations. These measures will help ensure such substances are used strictly for legal purposes, thus preventing diversion into illegal drug production.

Unified National Database and International Cooperation

Another key responsibility of the Authority is to coordinate efforts across local and federal agencies. For this purpose, it will develop and maintain a centralized national database that enhances data sharing and enables a rapid response to emerging threats. This platform will allow all stakeholders to monitor narcotic and psychotropic substances efficiently.

Through these initiatives, the UAE demonstrates a comprehensive and proactive approach to countering the narcotics threat. The establishment of the National Anti-Narcotics Authority reflects the country’s commitment to public safety and its alignment with global best practices.
