UAE approves Hybrid eVTOL Heliport at Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal

First hybrid heliport for eVTOL approved at Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal.

The UAE has approved the conversion of the existing helipad at the Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal into a hybrid heliport. This innovative project will accommodate both traditional helicopters and electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. This approval marks a significant milestone in the UAE’s commitment to advanced air mobility. It is a collaborative effort between eVTOL manufacturer Archer, its infrastructure partner Falcon Aviation, and the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).

Upgrades and Infrastructure Plans

The helipad’s transformation will involve extensive upgrades, including the installation of charging infrastructure and improved landing systems. These enhancements are crucial for enabling eVTOL operations. Importantly, this project leverages existing airspace and facilities, which will reduce costs and time compared to building a dedicated vertiport. Archer’s broader infrastructure network in the UAE is expected to kick off with these upgrades, in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Aviation (ADA). This strategic location, situated at a bustling cruise terminal, will support early commercial air taxi operations, connecting key destinations like Zayed Port, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, and the Saadiyat Cultural District.

Regulatory Standards and Future Vision

The GCAA’s approval comes with the development of regulatory standards for hybrid aviation infrastructure. The UAE becomes the first country to create such standards, and they are expected to be published by July 2025. These guidelines will ensure safety, interoperability, and operational efficiency. According to H.E. Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the GCAA, the project goes beyond infrastructure, symbolizing the UAE’s leadership in air mobility innovation. Archer CEO Adam Goldstein also stressed the importance of utilizing existing infrastructure, allowing faster deployment of operations. Falcon Aviation’s CEO, Captain Ramandeep Oberoi, highlighted the project’s potential to boost tourism and sustainability in the region.
