Turnitin has expanded its AI writing detection suite to include AI bypasser detection, which targets text altered by “humanizer” tools. Moreover, this addition helps educators identify content that may have been deliberately modified to evade standard checks. In addition, the feature integrates directly into Turnitin’s existing workflow, avoiding extra third-party tools that could introduce data or security risks.
How the New Capability Works
When enabled, Turnitin now checks submissions for likely AI-generated content and for content that shows signs of bypasser modification. Furthermore, the system flags attempts to conceal AI use while preserving usual originality and plagiarism checks. Also, the bypasser capability operates within Turnitin Originality and the AI add-ons used by iThenticate 2.0 customers, making deployment straightforward for institutions that already license those products.
Education Impact and Availability
AI bypassers have become widely available, and consequently, they pose a growing threat to academic integrity worldwide. Therefore, Turnitin’s update aims to keep pace with evolving LLM tools while supporting instructors’ ability to verify student work. In addition, the bypasser detector currently supports interactions and training in English only. Finally, this launch follows recent Turnitin innovations such as Turnitin Clarity and the rearchitected Turnitin Feedback Studio, reinforcing the company’s broader commitment to academic integrity and AI transparency.
“While cheating has always been a concern of educators, with the rise of AI, there has been a new category formed of cheating providers. These companies exist to profit from students’ misuse of AI by providing free and easy access to humanizers to conceal AI-generated content,” said Annie Chechitelli, chief product officer, Turnitin.
