Space42 and Gatehouse enable Smartphone-to-Satellite Connectivity Globally

Space42 and Gatehouse collaborate to bring satellite connectivity to smartphones.

Space42, a UAE-based AI-powered space technology firm, has taken a major step forward in satellite connectivity. Partnering with Danish satellite software leader Gatehouse Satcom, Space42 successfully demonstrated direct-to-device (D2D) communication using its L-band geostationary satellites. This trial used 3GPP-compliant Release 17 technology, aligning the system with global standards for scalability and future innovation.

Notably, this collaboration lays the foundation for Thuraya Direct, an upcoming messaging and IoT service. Slated for commercial launch in Q4 2025, Thuraya Direct will allow standard smartphones and IoT devices to connect via satellite, especially in areas without terrestrial coverage. As a result, Space42 is positioning itself to expand mobile reach where traditional infrastructure cannot go.

A Shared Vision for Scalable Connectivity

According to Ali Al Hashemi, CEO of Yahsat Space Services at Space42, the initiative exemplifies their forward-thinking strategy. By connecting directly with telecom providers, the company is addressing current market needs while preparing for broader global rollout. Furthermore, Al Hashemi emphasized that this project is about pushing the boundaries of mobile accessibility, not just for smartphones but for a growing ecosystem of connected devices.

Gatehouse Satcom’s contribution was equally critical. Jesper Noer, Vice President of Commercial at Gatehouse, noted the challenge and significance of running 5G NB-IoT over GEO satellites. Yet, their adaptable software, built for complex satellite environments, made the feat possible. In doing so, the companies validated that existing devices can operate smoothly within satellite networks.

Toward a Commercial Reality by Year-End

The project aligns with Space42’s operational model: adopt open standards early, execute through targeted programs, and scale with trusted partners. With Thuraya’s history of satellite innovation spanning more than two decades, this milestone builds on a legacy of delivering resilient communication in remote and challenging areas.

Now, with the technical demonstration completed, Space42 is moving quickly. The company is already engaging mobile network operators and industry stakeholders to prepare for the commercial debut of Thuraya Direct by late 2025. This effort signals a new era where smartphones can connect anywhere  from urban centres to the most remote landscapes.
