Samsung’s Galaxy XR Challenges Apple with Google and Qualcomm Backing

A new extended reality headset has been unveiled, introducing a powerful combination of artificial intelligence and immersive design. The Galaxy XR headset, priced at $1,799, marks a major step into the mixed-reality market, which continues to be shaped by rapid innovation and intense competition.

The device integrates virtual and mixed-reality capabilities, allowing users to both view immersive content and interact naturally with their surroundings. It runs on the Android XR operating system and is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip. Through AI enhancements, the headset aims to bridge entertainment, productivity, and real-world engagement.

Executives noted that this launch represents the first in a new lineup of AI-driven devices. “There’s a whole journey ahead of us in terms of other devices and form factors,” said Sharham Izadi, vice president of AR/XR. Lighter eyeglass versions are planned for the future, developed in collaboration with luxury eyewear makers such as Warby Parker and Gentle Monster.

AI Integration and Software Capabilities

The Galaxy XR leverages advanced AI technology to enhance user experiences. Its core feature, a multimodal AI system, interprets visual input to deliver contextual information and assistance. For instance, users can point at real-world objects to receive directions or learn about them instantly.

Executives explained that the headset’s Gemini service allows interaction through both gestures and gaze detection. This integration enables users to access applications such as YouTube, Google Photos, and Maps in an immersive environment while switching seamlessly between digital and physical contexts.

Analysts have observed that the addition of AI makes the Galaxy XR a significant entry into the extended reality market. Anshel Sag, principal analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, said, “Google entering the fray again changes the dynamic in the ecosystem.” He added that the software contribution could add as much as $1,000 in perceived value.

Customers purchasing the headset this year will receive a package of exclusive services, including one year of access to AI Pro tools, YouTube Premium, and Google Play Pass. This bundle is designed to highlight the synergy between advanced AI features and immersive media platforms.

Market Outlook and Competitive Landscape

The global extended reality market remains small but promising. Despite growing enthusiasm among major technology firms, the segment has faced three years of declining shipments. Research firm Gartner predicts a modest recovery, estimating the global head-mounted display market will grow 2.6% next year to reach $7.27 billion.

However, experts remain cautious. Counterpoint Research expects overall VR headset shipments to drop another 20% this year. Even so, with a more competitive price point than premium alternatives, the Galaxy XR could appeal strongly to enterprise customers seeking advanced, AI-powered solutions.

Samsung’s ten-year exploration of extended reality technologies provided the foundation for this product’s launch. “We have been agonizing over when to bring the product to the market, and considering various factors such as technology evolution and market situation, we believe that now is the best timing,” said Jay Kim, executive vice president of the mobile division.

With lighter versions and eyewear concepts on the horizon, the Galaxy XR launch signals a broader move toward redefining wearable computing. As AI continues to merge with visual and spatial computing, this headset could mark a pivotal shift in how people experience both digital and real-world environments.
