Samsung Set to Start HBM4 Chip Production in February

HBM4 memory chips on display

Samsung plans to begin production of its next-generation HBM4 chips next month. According to a person familiar with the matter, the chips will be supplied to Nvidia. Moreover, the move marks a key step in strengthening its position in advanced memory. As a result, the company aims to benefit from rising demand driven by artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, preparations for large-scale output are already underway.

Competitive Pressure and Market Response

Samsung has worked to close the gap with SK Hynix, a major supplier of advanced memory for AI accelerators. However, earlier supply delays weighed on earnings and share prices. On Monday, Samsung shares rose 2.2%. In contrast, SK Hynix shares fell 2.9% during morning trade. Although details on shipment volumes remain undisclosed, the development lifted investor sentiment. At the same time, a spokesperson declined to comment, while Nvidia did not respond immediately.

Industry Outlook and Upcoming Announcements

Reports indicate that Samsung recently passed HBM4 qualification tests for Nvidia and AMD. Therefore, shipments to Nvidia are expected to begin next month. Meanwhile, SK Hynix said in October that it had completed HBM supply talks with major customers for next year. Additionally, the company plans to deploy silicon wafers into a new fab next month, though it has not confirmed initial HBM4 output. Both firms will announce fourth-quarter earnings on Thursday, when HBM4 order details may emerge. Separately, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said earlier this month that the company’s next-generation chips, the Vera Rubin platform, is in “full production,” as preparations continue for a launch later this year alongside HBM4 chips.
