Roblox Launches Age-Tiered Accounts for Users Under 16
Roblox Corporation has introduced a major update to how younger users access its platform. Specifically, the company revealed two new account types—Roblox Kids and Roblox Select—which will launch in early June 2026.
As part of this rollout, users ages 5 to 8 will move into Roblox Kids accounts, the most restrictive tier. These accounts allow access only to games rated “Minimal” or “Mild,” while they also disable all communication features by default. In addition, a distinct background color will help parents quickly confirm that safety settings remain active.
Meanwhile, users ages 9 to 15 will receive Roblox Select accounts, which allow access to games rated up to “Moderate.” These accounts maintain current default communication settings; however, they include a unique visual design to distinguish them from standard profiles. Once users turn 16, they automatically transition to a standard account.
Furthermore, the platform will rely on facial age estimation technology to assign users to the correct tier. Notably, the company began requiring this verification globally in January for anyone accessing chat features. As a result, more than half of daily active users have already completed the process.
Stricter Controls and Expanded Parental Tools
At the same time, the update introduces stricter requirements for developers. To appear in Kids or Select categories, creators must complete full ID verification and maintain an active Roblox Plus subscription. Additionally, the platform will apply real-time AI scanning and evaluate how older users interact with new games before approving them for younger audiences.
Consequently, certain experiences, including social hangouts and free-form drawing games, will not appear in these categories by default. Meanwhile, parents will gain more control over their children’s activity. For example, they can block specific games for users up to age 15 or approve restricted content individually.
Moreover, the platform plans to adopt the International Age Rating Coalition framework later this year. This change will introduce localized content ratings, which will help families better understand game suitability across different regions.
Ongoing Safety Challenges and Response
These updates arrive during a period of heightened scrutiny. In recent months, more than 35 lawsuits have accused the platform of failing to protect minors from harmful interactions. Additionally, Los Angeles County filed a lawsuit in February, alleging that the platform provided predators with tools to target children.
In response, leadership has emphasized that safety improvements remain ongoing. Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman has framed the effort as a continuous process, noting that safety is “a journey, not a static feature”.
