Abu Dhabi Advances Arabic Education Through BAREC 2.0

Abu Dhabi officials announce Arabic language research agreement

Abu Dhabi has launched the second edition of the Balanced Arabic Readability Evaluation Corpus (BAREC 2.0), introducing artificial intelligence tools to improve Arabic language education and make written content more accessible.

The initiative brings together the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC) and New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), with support from Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) and Zayed University.

The project uses advanced AI models to assess and rewrite Arabic texts according to different reading proficiency levels. Furthermore, it provides explanatory feedback to help users understand how the system determines text complexity.

The initiative aims to support educators, writers and students while strengthening Arabic language research and digital content development across the UAE.

AI Tools Adapt Arabic Texts to Different Reading Levels

BAREC 2.0 introduces AI-powered tools that adjust Arabic text according to readers’ language abilities. The system can simplify complex passages or rewrite content for more advanced readers.

It achieves this by making targeted changes to vocabulary, sentence structure and linguistic complexity. As a result, users can produce material suited to different educational levels and reading requirements.

The platform also explains its readability classifications. For example, it provides feedback about the vocabulary and structural features that influence a text’s assigned reading level.

This feature adds transparency to AI-assisted language assessment. Moreover, it helps users understand why certain passages require simpler wording or more advanced language.

The tools offer several practical applications:

  • For educators: Teachers can adapt learning materials to different student proficiency levels.

  • For students: Learners can simplify difficult passages and improve reading comprehension.

  • For writers: Content creators can prepare Arabic materials for different audiences.

  • For researchers: Linguists can examine readability patterns and advance Arabic language research.

As a result, BAREC 2.0 aims to improve access to Arabic educational resources. It also supports more inclusive learning experiences across different proficiency levels.

Research Partnership Builds on BAREC 1.0

The latest edition builds on the linguistic resources developed through BAREC 1.0, which contains more than 69,000 sentences.

The original project began in 2023 through collaboration between the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre, NYU Abu Dhabi and Zayed University. Its broader objective was to develop a 10-million-word Arabic linguistic corpus.

The collection covers different genres, subjects and countries of origin. Importantly, readability levels remain a central focus of the research.

For BAREC 2.0, MBZUAI and Zayed University join NYU Abu Dhabi as key academic partners. Meanwhile, the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre continues to lead the initiative.

Dr Ali bin Tamim, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre, said the project combines linguistic expertise with advanced AI models. He highlighted its potential to improve research on Arabic readability and support education and content creation.

Similarly, Professor Fabio Piano, Vice Chancellor of NYU Abu Dhabi, said the collaboration would strengthen Arabic language education. He also highlighted opportunities to improve curriculum design and create more accessible educational materials.

The partnership will continue through joint research activities and academic publications. The participating institutions also aim to expand knowledge in Arabic language processing and readability assessment.

Strengthening Arabic in Digital Education

BAREC 2.0 reflects Abu Dhabi’s wider efforts to advance Arabic language research through technology. In particular, the project addresses the need for accessible Arabic content across education and digital publishing.

Arabic presents distinct challenges for automated language processing. Its vocabulary, morphology and sentence structures require specialised linguistic resources and evaluation methods.

Therefore, research initiatives such as BAREC can help improve how AI systems interpret and adapt Arabic content. They can also support the development of educational applications for different age groups and proficiency levels.

The project could benefit schools, universities, publishers and digital content providers. Additionally, its research outcomes may support future developments in Arabic language technologies.

Through collaboration between academic institutions and language specialists, Abu Dhabi aims to strengthen Arabic’s presence in the digital environment. BAREC 2.0 represents another step towards making Arabic education more accessible through applied AI research.
