OpenAI has introduced GPT-5.1 with two new intelligent modes that enhance speed, reasoning, and engagement. The Instant mode focuses on fast, natural replies for everyday conversations, whereas the Thinking mode tackles complex prompts through extended reasoning. The system now evaluates the difficulty of each request and automatically allocates more processing power to challenging tasks, enabling both quick and highly analytical responses.
Personalisation and Expanded User Control
GPT-5.1 adds eight personality styles — Default, Professional, Friendly, Candid, Quirky, Efficient, Nerdy, and Cynical. Users can adjust warmth, directness, and emoji usage to match their preferred interaction tone. These settings apply immediately across chats, and older GPT-5 versions remain available for three months for those who prefer to switch back. Furthermore, the model demonstrates improved accuracy in mathematics and coding, simplifying complex ideas without unnecessary technical language.
Gradual Rollout and API Integration
Early access will begin this week for Pro, Plus, Go, and Business subscribers, and free users will follow shortly after. Enterprise and Education plans receive a one-week preview. The gradual rollout will extend to the API later in the week to ensure platform stability. Since the launch comes shortly after GPT-5, this release aims to strengthen performance consistency and user connection while maintaining rapid development momentum.
