Microsoft Rolls Out GPT-5 Upgrade Across All Copilot Tools

Microsoft Copilot powered by GPT-5 interface

Microsoft has upgraded all its Copilot tools with GPT-5, OpenAI’s latest and most advanced large language model. The update arrives through a new Smart Mode, designed to deliver faster, more accurate, and more context-aware responses. Besides the Windows Copilot chatbot, GPT-5 now powers Microsoft 365 Copilot, Azure AI Foundry, and GitHub Copilot.

To try GPT-5, users can visit the Copilot website from any browser. Selecting Smart Mode in the model menu below the text input field activates the new experience. Although the feature is rolling out gradually, early testers have reported noticeably quicker responses compared to earlier models.

How to Access and What to Expect

When we tested Smart Mode, Copilot handled numerous queries without the restrictions seen in the free ChatGPT tier, which often switches to older models. Another advantage is that no Microsoft account is required to try it.

Microsoft confirmed that its AI Red Team thoroughly tested GPT-5 before release, ensuring one of the strongest safety profiles among prior OpenAI models. The reasoning capabilities enable Copilot to stay focused during long conversations, provide more accurate answers to complex questions, and assist in tasks like replying to emails or analysing documents.

Expanding GPT-5 Across Microsoft’s Ecosystem

Microsoft 365 Copilot benefits from improved reasoning and better handling of detailed instructions, while GitHub Copilot gains significant boosts in code quality and user experience. According to GitHub, the latest model also offers clearer logic and more reliable outputs than its predecessors. These enhancements aim to make Copilot not just a helpful assistant, but a more capable partner for productivity, coding, and problem-solving.
