Microsoft releases cloud-based tools designed for telecommunications companies

Microsoft has recently launched two artificial intelligence (AI)-powered services that cater to the specific needs of the telecommunications industry. These services, which are built on the same capabilities as Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform, aim to help telecom operators unlock new business opportunities through data and insights into their operations, including the deployment of high-speed 5G networks.

Microsoft’s recent foray into the 5G arena was initiated by the acquisition of cloud networking companies Affirmed Networks and Metaswitch in 2020. As a company that is heavily invested in AI, Microsoft has been keen on imbuing AI into all of its products. The company has even invested in OpenAI’s ChatGPT bot, a development that has garnered much attention in Silicon Valley and beyond.

With the release of Nexus, an all-in-one platform that allows operators to manage their networks from the cloud, as well as two AI Ops services, Microsoft has shown its commitment to the telecommunications industry. Nexus, in particular, is expected to benefit telecom partners such as AT&T, Ericsson, and Nokia Oyj, as it offers a comprehensive solution for network management.

According to Jason Zander, executive vice president of strategic missions and technologies at Microsoft, the company is taking its native cloud work and making it specific to the telecom operator network space. This means that the same technology that Microsoft uses in its cloud-based services is now available to telecom operators, allowing them to streamline their operations and improve their services.

Monica Zethzon, a vice president at Ericsson, has expressed her excitement over the developments, saying that they will enable operators to “transform their core networks while improving customer experiences.” With Microsoft’s AI-powered services and Nexus platform, the telecom industry can expect a more efficient, effective, and customer-centric approach to network management.
