Meta and Startupbootcamp Launch Llama Drive for MENA Startups

In an exciting new initiative, Meta has teamed up with Startupbootcamp to propel the MENA startup ecosystem. This collaboration introduces the Llama Design Drive, a program crafted to enhance regional innovation through advanced AI technologies.

The Llama Design Drive will unfold through three distinct four-week sprints across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. This initiative will leverage Meta’s open-source large language model, Llama 3.1, offering MENA startups access to cutting-edge AI tools to solve pressing challenges in sectors such as mobility, aviation, energy, retail, and real estate.

In addition to Meta and Startupbootcamp’s joint efforts, strategic alliances have been established with prominent industry players like RTA (The Roads and Transport Authority), Chalhoub Group, and Dubai Holding.

These partnerships will help define design challenges and explore innovative AI-driven solutions.

The program aims to bridge the gap between established corporations and the dynamic AI startup community, fostering local innovation through AI. Selected startups will benefit from accelerated entry into a global program backed by Meta and could secure up to $500,000 for further product development.

“Our program not only advocates for the adoption of AI technologies to address corporate issues but also fosters connections between startups, corporates, and industry experts, enhancing networks and technical skills,” said Ibrahim ‘Abe’ Seksek, CEO MENA at Startupbootcamp.

Joulan Abdul Khalek, Policy Programs Manager for Africa, the Middle East, and Turkey at Meta, shared his enthusiasm for the potential of AI, stating, “Llama Design Drive showcases how open-source collaboration can lead to impactful AI solutions.”

The timing of this initiative aligns with MENA’s growing readiness for AI integration, as regional governments and businesses increasingly recognize the global shift towards advanced technologies. A PwC study projects that the Middle East will capture two percent of the global AI benefits by 2030 and will experience an annual growth of 20-34 percent in AI’s contribution to regional GDP.
