Meta Acquires Robotics Startup to Boost Humanoid Robot Development
Meta Platforms has acquired Assured Robot Intelligence, a firm focused on humanoid robot systems. Notably, the deal represents a targeted step in its broader push into robotics. As a result, the company continues to position itself within the fast-growing humanoid robotics market.
Moreover, the startup was co-founded by Lerrel Pinto and Xiaolong Wang. Their work emphasizes scalable robot learning and real-world manipulation. According to Wang’s stated vision, the goal is to build “super-intelligent humanoid robots at scale to deliver abundant physical labor to humanity.” Meanwhile, Pinto has projected that one million robots could be deployed by 2030.
In addition, the acquisition aligns with earlier moves, including the formation of a robotics division within Reality Labs in 2025. This effort is led by Marc Whitten. Furthermore, CTO Andrew Bosworth has described humanoid robotics as the company’s next major investment area. Therefore, the company plans significant spending as it develops its long-term strategy. Instead of building its own robots, however, it aims to license software platforms to manufacturers.
Rising Competition in Robotics
At the same time, competition in humanoid robotics continues to intensify. For example, Tesla is advancing its Optimus robot. Similarly, Boston Dynamics continues development of Atlas. In addition, newer entrants like Figure AI are attracting major investment.
Meanwhile, analysts at Goldman Sachs estimate the market could reach $38 billion by 2035. Consequently, major companies have accelerated acquisitions to secure talent and technology. For instance, Mobileye acquired Mentee Robotics earlier in 2026. Likewise, Amazon purchased robotics startup Rivr in March.
However, the company has also faced challenges in its broader AI acquisition strategy. Notably, its $2 billion purchase of Manus now faces regulatory pressure from China’s National Development and Reform Commission. Even so, it continues to invest in talent through additional hires and acquisitions.
Strategy and Future Outlook
With this acquisition, the company strengthens its capabilities in embodied AI and robotics learning. Additionally, the new team’s expertise complements existing work in sensor technologies developed for Quest headsets and Ray-Ban smart glasses. As a result, the company aims to integrate physical AI with its broader ecosystem.
However, significant hurdles remain before consumer-ready humanoid robots become widely available. While progress continues, practical deployment still requires advances in hardware, safety, and scalability. Even Andrew Bosworth has acknowledged that such systems remain years away.
Nevertheless, the acquisition highlights a clear direction. As competition increases and investment grows, the race to define the future of humanoid robotics continues to accelerate.
