Foldables have proliferated over the past few years, with the likes of Motorola, Samsung, and Xiaomi trying their hands at advancing the smartphone form factor. While Google has yet to announce its foldable officially, there’s no doubt it’s coming after all we’ve seen and heard. Google will have nothing new to say about the Pixel Fold when it unveils the device at Google I/O next month. After a series of recent leaks, we have almost all the details.
The juiciest leak comes from Jon Prosser, who has a solid record of accuracy. He claims to have a full spec sheet for the Pixel Fold, and it’s filled to the brim with class-leading hardware. The star of the show will be the foldable display, which measures 7.6 inches at 2208×1840 resolution. This foldable OLED has a 120Hz refresh rate, as does the external 5.8-inch screen. Obviously, this one doesn’t fold, but it has an impressive 2092×1080 resolution. That’s a bit higher than some past leaks, which pegged the cover display as HD+, implying sub-1080p.
On the inside, the leak claims Google’s foldable will have the Tensor G2, 12GB of RAM, and 256 or 512GB of storage. That’s all in line with any flagship phone from Google in 2023. The camera setup is also shaping up well with a 48MP primary, a 10.8MP ultrawide, and a 10.8MP 5x telephoto.
The leaked spec sheet also says the device will weigh 283g, which is a lot even for a foldable. Samsung’s Z Fold 4 is only 263g, and it’s already a lot to haul around. A previous leak called that and noted the Pixel would have a larger battery. Indeed, the latest leak claims a 4,500mAh cell in the Pixel Fold, which is 100mAh larger than the Z Fold 4. In renders and an in-the-wild leak (see below), it’s clear Google has expanded the bezels around the main display, with larger inlays along the top and bottom. It doesn’t have the same all-screen look as Samsung’s foldables, but the alleged 6:5 aspect ratio should make it comfortable to use in either orientation.
Rumors suggest Google is set to reveal the Fold for the first time with a teaser this week. That would be notable as the first official mention of the Fold, but there’s unlikely to be any new information. The full reveal is expected at I/O on May 10, and pre-orders will start immediately on the Google Store with a $1,799 starting price. That’s the same starting price as Samsung’s Z Fold 4, but the leaks also note that Google might include a free Pixel Watch with the purchase of the Fold. That might help take the sting out, but carriers probably won’t have the same offer when they begin selling the device in late May.
