A new update now lets users reshare Stories from any public account even when they are not tagged. This change aims to reduce friction in situations where someone forgets to tag others, and it also helps people share content they enjoy without taking screenshots. Moreover, the feature creates a smoother sharing flow, especially when someone wants to repost funny or emotional Stories. Although this capability broadens how public content spreads, public accounts can still opt out anytime by adjusting their privacy controls.
Creators learned of the update through a post on Threads, and many welcomed the convenience it brings. Additionally, the feature resembles an earlier tool that allowed users to repost Reels and feed posts while automatically crediting the original creator. Because both tools work in similar ways, users should quickly adapt to this new option.
How the Story Reshare Feature Works
To reshare a Story, users simply open the app and tap on a Story posted by a public account. Then they will see a share icon next to the message box. After selecting “Add to your story,” the Story appears on their profile with attribution shown automatically. This mirrors how Reels credit their original creator, and it helps maintain clarity around content ownership. Furthermore, the update is rolling out globally across iOS and Android, so more users should see it soon.
While many already have access, others may receive it gradually. Even so, the rollout appears steady, and wider availability should arrive shortly. Until now, users had limited options when they were not tagged, and this update solves that long-standing limitation.
Adjusting Privacy Settings for Public Accounts
Although the feature benefits many, public accounts that prefer not to participate can disable it. To turn off resharing, users must go to Settings & Activity, tap Privacy, and select Story. Then they can toggle off “Allow sharing to story.” Once changed, followers will no longer be able to reshare their Stories. Because privacy needs vary from user to user, Instagram offers this level of control to help everyone decide how their content circulates.
