Honeywell transforms operations in 4 iconic buildings

The Sydney Opera House

The Sydney Opera House announced Honeywell as its first Global Goals partner, supporting the world-famous performing arts centre’s commitment to sustainability, diversity, and inclusion. In October 2019, the Opera House became the first Australian art institution to commit to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which aim to address the most pressing issues of our time.

Launching a program to support First Nations tertiary graduates with their chosen profession.

Sydney Opera House CEO Louise Herron AM said: “As we approach the Opera House’s 50th anniversary in 2023, we are looking for more ways to work with organizations that share our vision for positive social and environmental change. So we welcome Honeywell as our first Global Goals partner.” Honeywell technology has already helped the Opera House reduce its water consumption by 30% through improved monitoring and supported our goal of reducing energy use by 20%. 

This new partnership will enable an expanded range of significant projects, contributing to the huge collaborative effort required to achieve the Global Goals.”

Buda Castle

The Buda Castle is part of the Buda old town area and is one of the most important cultural and touristic centres of Budapest. Since 1987, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site. The first stones of the gothic-style royal palace were laid in the spring of 1247, following the Tatar invasion, on orders by King Bela IV. Thanks to the expansions and renovations over the subsequent centuries, today, you can find the signs of baroque, renaissance, and secession styles.

THE CHALLENGE

The previously installed IT systems were unable to handle the central processing and control functions of the machines and installations operating in the buildings and the required level of information. The data of the isolated systems and registers are saved in different databases, and it took great effort to retrieve the information required to maintain these systems from these separate databases.

THE TASK

The objective involves the simple and central operability of the machine installations in the special exhibition areas of these buildings. Precious cultural values that require special storage have high requirements for the engineering systems: a consistent temperature and humidity must be continuously provided, special lighting is required, etc. Due to the historical status of the building complex, the assembly work could only be performed under strict rules. In the larger area, an IT network had to be created to maintain proper communication. 

The Johan Cruijff Arena

The Johan Cruijff Arena (JCA) in Amsterdam is one of the world’s most sustainable stadiums and the home of the AFC Ajax and the Dutch national football teams.

The Johan Cruijff Arena is one of the most sustainable stadiums in the world. For example, the multifunctional stadium uses residual heat to keep frost off the playing field, is powered by more than 4,200 solar panels on its roof and one wind turbine, and processes waste as cleverly as possible.

The JCA used a central database for gathering and processing data from facility systems such as ticketing, safety and security, and more. Because of this, stadium officials wanted a BMS solution that would integrate this technical data and then further improve both visitor experience and building performance.

The Honeywell team implemented an integrated building solution based on its “digitized maintenance” solution – the next generation of Honeywell service driven by analytics and IoT integration. The solution taps into extensive building sensors that enable monitoring and analyzing building performance 24/7. 

Assisted by sensors, the Honeywell Building Management System collects data from the connected equipment, controllers, and spaces. Based on data analysis, failures can be detected earlier so that maintenance can be carried out before any inconvenience arises and impacts stadium operations. The Honeywell BMS supports the Johan Cruijff Arena in achieving its goals of becoming a flagship in the field of data-driven operations — where regular preventive maintenance transforms into predictable, data-driven maintenance.

Eiffel Tower

Honeywell announced its sustainable refrigerant technology and is supporting a new cooling system at the Eiffel Tower on January 10th,2022.

The installation provides a greener solution for the Paris landmark’s west pillar – home to the Visitor Information Center, a souvenir shop, and a hydraulic lift that ascends 300 meters to sweeping views over the city. 

Honeywell says its Solstice ze (R-1234ze) ultra-low-global warming potential refrigerant is both energy efficient and cost-effective. The new cooling system replaces the tower’s old, legacy apparatus – and is part of a wider mission to improve safety to meet EU regulations and reduce the tower’s carbon footprint. It is one of several major global landmarks that has seen a sustainable retrofit as part of a global drive for sustainability in buildings. 

The system uses Honeywell’s hydro fluoro olefin (HFO) technology, which helps customers meet environmental, social, and governance goals without sacrificing performance. The tech has a variety of applications, including refrigerants for supermarkets, auto air conditioning units, insulation, care products, and cleaning solutions. 

 “Solstice ze provides a long-term, environmentally preferable, and cost-effective solution to tourist landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, helping them to increase energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions,” said Julien Soulet, vice president and general manager of Honeywell Fluorine Products Europe. “Globally, demand is growing for solutions like Solstice ze and Honeywell’s other Solstice solutions, which have been chosen to cool major structures, including the Eurotunnel, because of the benefits they provide for companies to meet sustainability goals.”
